Ghana Strengthens School Health Policy with WHO Support

Ghana is moving to overhaul its School Health Policy as part of a national strategy to improve health outcomes among children and adolescents. Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and funded by Fondation Botnar, the revision aims to align national policy with WHO-UNESCO Global Standards for Health-Promoting Schools. This comprehensive reform focuses on improving health services, education, and environments in basic and senior high schools.

Key elements include enhanced health literacy, routine screenings, access to nutritious foods, and improved sanitation and mental health support. As Ghana pursues Universal Health Coverage, policymakers highlight the role of educational settings in preventing disease and promoting lifelong wellness. The WHO also recently published the country’s first National Quality of Care Report, offering insights into clinical service delivery across health facilities and framing priorities for future improvements. Collectively, these initiatives underscore a coordinated push to integrate health advancement with education and community development objectives.
